On Monday, we had our class photos. Some children had family or individual photos taken.
On Thursday, we went to the University of Waikato to experience a powhiri on the Te Kohinga Marama Marae.
Kaiwhakahaere Ray Gage welcomed us and explained what a 'marae' is:
. . . it is the space in front of the meeting house (wharenui) where the Tangata Whenua, (the local people, our hosts) welcome the Manuwhiri (visitors). The marae is an area within the actual 'pa' or village where visitors are welcomed before entering the wharenui.
The whole school attended. While Kowhai were looking at the carvings in the wharenui, Totara and Kauri teams were sketching and preparing for their turn in the wharenui.
Please check the HES Cultural Blog for more photos.
On Friday, we had a visit from a hot air balloon, named 'Miz Waikato'. It was part of the 'Balloons over Waikato' programme. We were on Dawson Street park at 7.30 to watch the balloonists inflate their balloon.
